The Fabienne Colas Foundation’s Youth and Diversity Program is proud to be back with a call for applications for its 2020 Being Black in Canada program (Being Black in Montreal), presented by Netflix in collaboration with the National Bank.

Thanks to the support of Netflix, the National Bank, and the Canada Media Fund, in addition to the 5 Black French-speaking Montreal participants, the program will also be able to welcome 5 Black English-speaking artists from the Greater Montreal Region. After an initial call for French-speaking candidates earlier this year, this 2nd call for applications targets only Black English-speaking candidates wishing to make their films in English.

Please note the 2020 other calls for applications for the Program in Montreal, Toronto, Halifax for 2020 are closed.

About the Program

This program offers professional mentorship in the audiovisual production of a short film with the theme of “Being Black in Montreal.” 10 young, promising Black filmmakers (5 francophones and 5 anglophones) will be guided through the many steps in audiovisual production (screenwriting, directing, editing, post-production, etc.), and will create a documentary short (from 8 to 10 minutes). This process will be carried out under the professional tutelage of an industry professional with professional equipment from L’Inis (l’Institut national de l’image et du son) and Peak Media (Postproduction).

Their final work will be screened as:

  • World Premiere at the Toronto Black Film Festival – February 10 to 15, 2021.
  • Atlantic Premiere at the Halifax Black Film Festival – February 26 to 28, 2021.
  • Quebec Premiere at the Montreal International Black Film Festival – September 2021.
  • Potential screenings to other festivals / events after March 2021 (tbd).

Filmmakers will address the issue of social integration of people from black communities in Montreal through film. The program addresses emerging creators between 18 and 30, who are from black communities and have a passion for cinema. Potential candidates have a dream to work in the audiovisual field but have not yet had the opportunity, due to social, economic, and/or cultural reasons.

 Eligibility criteria:

  1. Be between 18 and 30 (included) on the date of application.
  2. Be from a black community.
  3. Have demonstrated an interest in the audiovisual field and documentary filmmaking.
  4. Have concrete career-oriented plans in the audiovisual field.
  5. Demonstrate motivation for the program.
  6. Be available for activities related to the program, particularly from August & December 2020 for all training, creation, editing, follow-up, discussions etc; AND between February & October 2021 for screenings, festivals, distribution, promotion etc.
  7. Be available to attend the Black Film Festivals tour in Montréal, Toronto, and Halifax.
  8. Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
  9. Live in the Greater Montreal Area.
  10. Submit a video or film you made in a non-professional setting (short film, clip, video, etc.).
  11. Submit a concrete documentary project that fits the program theme (250 words).
  12. Speak and write French fluently (in order to fully participate in class).

People who have already created, completed, or directed professional videos or films are NOT eligible.

Films can be created in English; HOWEVER, each applicant must be fluent in French to fully benefit from the program and easily take part in training, mentorships and more.

Article 1 – The Organization

The mission of the Fabienne Colas Foundation (FCF), a professional, artistic, not-for profit organization, is to promote and distribute art, culture and cinema both nationally and internationally. The FCF focuses on black culture (in Montreal, Toronto, Halifax, New York City, Salvador – Bahia, Brazil) and Québécois culture (in Port-au-Prince). It wants to continue creating a space for discussion and debate about important current cultural, social and socio-economic issues through film talks, panel discussions, conferences, and other events. In addition to showcasing and giving a voice to artists who otherwise wouldn’t be seen or heard, the FCF participates in the development of different artistic disciplines through education by offering training and professional development workshops, as well as artist awards and grants. www.fondationfabiennecolas.org

Article 2 – About the “Youth and Diversity” program

The Fabienne Colas Foundation’s Youth and Diversity Program offers training, professional mentors and a visibility platform in the audiovisual field to 10 young, promising filmmakers from black communities (5 Francophones and 5 Anglophones). The FCF’s Youth and Diversity Program is proud to be back with another edition of Being Black in Canada (Being Black in Montreal). Its goal is to cultivate future audiovisual talent in black communities, to those who haven’t had the chance to receive in-depth professional training in the field.

Article 3 – Eligibility

Article 4 – Application

  1. Deadline: August 31, 2020

Article 5 – Selection

The organization will make a pre-selection of all completed applications received according to the previously outlined criteria.

Pre-selected applications will be submitted to a selection committee who will choose the program participants.

The choice of the organization and the selection committee will be made at their discretion. They will not have to provide justification or motivation, and cannot under any circumstance be the subject of a complaint.

The Organization reserves the right to select fewer participants than expected.

Article 6 – Schedule and condition

  1. Overall schedule of the 2020 edition of the FFC’s Youth and Diversity Program: Being Black in Canada (Being Black in Montreal).

NB: a detailed schedule will be given to selected participants. Filmmakers participating in the program are required to participate in scheduled events.

  1. Young filmmakers agree to follow technical guidelines (length, format, etc.) and the program’s “Being Black in Montreal” theme.
  2. Young filmmakers have full creative and editorial licence over their film and will be the writer and director. However, he or she agrees to fully assign the national and international / worldwide rights for an unlimited time to the organization (and its designated partners), who could, in whole or in part, distribute the film through any existing medium (VOD, TV licencing and/or other), submit it to different festivals, make it available for free and/or sell it through broadcasting platforms, if applicable.
  3. The filmmaker is responsible for transportation fees and meals throughout the program.

Article 7 – Participation agreement

All selected competitors must sign a participation agreement stipulating an authorization to distribute, transfer rights and that their image may be used by sponsors, financial partners, the organizer and the show’s broadcasters, compliance with program rules, and that all work is unpaid. Any competitor who refuses to sign the documents before the prescribed deadline will be disqualified or ineligible to participate.

Article 8 – Benefits and award

  1. Individual guidance, in the form of a mentorship, is offered throughout the creation of the films.
  2. Professional equipment is made available for film production.
  3. Participants’ final work will be screened as: World Premiere at the Toronto Black Film Festival – February 10 to 15, 2021. Atlantic Premiere at the Halifax Black Film Festival – February 26 to 28, 2021. Quebec Premiere at the Montreal Intl Black Film Festival – September 2021.
  4. Young filmmakers will share their experience with the public.
  5. All films may later be broadcast on VOD, TV or/and other at the discretion of the organization.
  6. Screening fees will be paid to the participants when films are screened at the 3 Black Film Festivals in Montreal, Toronto, Halifax.
  7. Awards may be allocated at the end of the program.

Article 9 – Acceptance

By applying for the Fabienne Colas Foundation’s Youth and Diversity program: Being Black in Canada (Being Black in Montreal), the candidate and his or her eligible beneficiaries tacitly accept the present set of Rules & Conditions without reservation.

Any candidates who violates of one or more of the conditions for selection stipulated in the present document will be denied the opportunity to continue participating in the selection.
